The holidays can be both a wonderful time for some, and a particularly vulnerable and triggering period for others. Emotions can stem from memories of past holidays ruined by substance abuse and mental illness, and anxieties about the future. Now as we grapple with the added uncertainty brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the threat it poses to long-held holiday traditions, it’s important to recognize the stressors that put us at risk and how to manage them. It’s also a time for families and loved ones to remember the benefits of self-care and practice setting healthy boundaries. Moreover, when coping strategies don’t work and everyone is suffering, we need to know that help is available.
DISCUSSION POINTS:
✔️ Challenges facing families over the holidays and the importance of setting healthy boundaries, particularly in light of pandemic-related safety precautions and restrictions
✔️ Tips for practicing self-care while supporting loved ones struggling with mental health and addiction
✔️ How, where, and when to refer someone for help
